Head of Content & Community

Full-time, hybrid role. Meatpacking District, NYC. Start date: Early to mid summer 2026. Reports to: Managing Director.

About R&L

R&L is a not‑for‑profit record store, café and event space opening Fall/Winter 2026 in the legendary Florent space in NYC’s Meatpacking District. We exist to champion music, build community, and create a space where culture and conversation thrive.

Role Overview

Own the R&L brand from day one. Build the website, launch social channels, develop an editorial voice, and forge the community partnerships that make R&L NYC’s most talked‑about cultural destination before we even open the doors. This is a rare opportunity to build an editorial and content operation from scratch at a new cultural institution. You’ll define our voice, produce the content, and grow the audience—across digital, social, video, and press—from zero to opening day and beyond. You’ll manage a small network of freelance contributors and work closely with the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Website build and ongoing content management
  • Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Bluesky — primary channels
  • Editorial calendar and long‑form content strategy
  • Press and media relations; NYC arts and culture press
  • Community partnerships with artists, labels, venues
  • In‑store event promotion and audience development
  • Email marketing and CRM
  • Manage PR, social and content agency relationships

Experience

  • 5+ years in editorial, content or publishing roles
  • Strong writer — long‑form, short‑form and social copy
  • Hands‑on video content creation and production experience
  • Background in music, arts or culture media preferred
  • Track record growing engaged audiences through original content

Skills & Attributes

  • Editorial judgement — knows a story worth telling
  • Video and photo production, comfortable on camera and behind it
  • Social content native — understands format, rhythm and platform culture
  • Energized by NYC’s music scene; existing relationships a big plus
  • Comfortable working in a small, fast‑moving not‑for‑profit environment

What We Offer

  • The chance to build something from nothing at a genuinely new cultural institution
  • Creative autonomy — this is your editorial voice to develop
  • A tight‑knit team that cares deeply about music, community and NYC
  • Salary range $100,000–$130,000 depending on experience
  • Health benefits included
