Chek is a design-forward web development agency, and we’re looking for a versatile and experienced Freelance Technical SEO to join us on a part-time basis. This is a client-facing, execution-focused contract role ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of content strategy, SEO, and CMS implementation, within a collaborative agency environment.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for auditing and optimizing the technical health of client websites, ensuring strong search performance, accessibility, and compliance with SEO best practices.
Responsibilities
- Conduct full-site technical audits and diagnostics, identifying crawl issues, indexing barriers, site speed problems, and other SEO-impacting technical flaws
- Use tools like Screaming Frog, PageSpeed Insights, Rich Results Test, SE Ranking, and Google Search Console to audit, monitor, and optimize site architecture, schema markup, and page experience metrics.
- Recommend and implement improvements related to core web vitals, structured data, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, and internal linking
- Collaborate directly with web developers in Slack and in project management platform, to resolve issues related to rendering, page load, JavaScript, or responsive design, or other technical optimization items requiring development implementation
- Implement on-page technical element fixes directly into client CMS where possible, in collaboration with Content SEO who will own content meta data generation: missing header tags, missing canonical tags, robots.txt management, hreflang implementation, etc.
- Monitor and report technical SEO performance and KPIs via dashboards (Looker Studio) and analytics platforms.
- Communicate directly with clients and project managers, presenting audit findings and roadmaps clearly, effectively for diverse audience skill sets, and professionally.
- Manage assigned issues, and sometimes create issues, in project management platform Linear
- Stay up-to-date with algorithm updates, and best practices, and emerging technical SEO trends.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Content SEO, Project Manager, and web developers to align SEO with broader site architecture and user experience.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in technical SEO, preferably in an agency environment, with a strong understanding of crawling and indexing controls and mechanisms.
- Deep knowledge of technical ranking factors, indexation, site performance, and mobile-first optimization
- Strong understanding of page speed and Core Web Vitals, with ability to analyze both field and lab data, and identify targeted recommendations to improve them
- Hands-on experience with auditing tools such as Screaming Frog or other crawlers, Google Search Console, and PageSpeed Insights.
- Strong ability to work directly with web developers and translate technical needs into clear action items.
- Excellent client presentation and written and verbal client communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make data-driven decisions.
- Self-motivated and able to implement your own recommendations directly in the CMS, or write Linear issues for developer implementation.
- Familiarity with WordPress CMS is required; bonus for experience with Shopify, Webflow, or headless CMS environments.
- Bonus for advanced statistical and data analysis experience (e.g., advanced Excel, Python, PowerBI).
